Hostgator is one of the most known web hosting companies on the planet. They’re situated in Houston, Texas but they’ve just recently also expanded to Austin. The company was started in 2002 by Brent Oxley, out of his dorm room at Florida Atlantic University. They’re considered as green hosting. For starters they switch all of their servers to more efficient technology. Doing this they reduced power consumption by 36%. On top of that all of their shared and reseller servers are wind powered (they purchased Renewable Energy Credits).
Just a little bit of statistics – currently they have over 400.000 customers located in over 200 countries. They host over 5 million domains and they make up approximately 1% of the world’s Internet traffic and currently host about 800 TB of data. All the magic happens on over than 12.000 servers for which more than 750 employees are taking care of. All those servers are housed in The Planet’s data centers. Those are ranging from 22,000 to more than 78,000 square feet. Servers are accessible through Certified Cisco Network feature 10 backbone and fiber providers including: Global Crossing, Level3, AT&T, Time Warner etc. Their system administrators monitor all servers 24/7 and appropriate actions are taken for every issue before it becomes too serious.
Hostgator offers a variety of hosting plans. You can choose from shared, reseller, vps and dedicated hosting. Furthermore for each of those types there are different plans according to customers needs and budget. Emphasis is on Linux servers (both shared and dedicated) but they also offer Windows dedicated servers. Just recently they’ve started beta testing their Windows shared plans that include ASP and ASP.NET support. All plans include addons domains, sub domains, email accounts, MySQL databases, cPanel (extra fees for dedicated plans), FTP accounts and more. They’ve got huge support resources – over 550 video tutorials and 700 help articles. If that’s not helpful enough you can count on their 24/7 live support – let that be chat or phone support.
They’ve won lots of awards. In August 2008, Inc. Magazine recognized Hostgator as the 21st fastest growing company in the United States. In August of 2009, Inc. Magazine proclaimed Hostgator as 239th fastest growing company in the USA. They’ve also received awards from various hosting review sites like: Websitehosting.com, About.com, FindMyHost.com, Web Host Directory, WebHost-Guru, Reviewhut, WebHostingStuff.com, WebhostMagazine.com, HostReview.com and many more.
